Our liberty had been taken away -
Death was the price to get it back.
All we wanted was freedom,
But insanity promised a never-ending fight.

Seeking compassion... freedom... peace...
Escaping to a world far from the one we knew.
Leaving behind our death -
Running to catch our future.

Terror prodded us onto our journey,
Anguish kept us going.
The pain and fears of the ones we left behind
Haunted us through sleepless nights.

Hitler's unforgettable tirade
Still lingered in our minds.
His all-encompassing anger for our people
Urged us farther on the trek.

Your shining future, it seemed *so* bright.
I only wanted the best for you.
And there we were -
Trembling on the edge of a life without fear.

Freedom was so close -
Only a heartbeat away.
But then our lives were threatened by your cry of pain,
My life was threatened by my love.

I stopped your breath of life,
Tenderly ending your time with me.
My darling child -
You so gently slipped away.

I can still see you there -
My innocent child.
Your accusing stare
Haunting me when I close my eyes.
